R. Kelly banned from Philadelphia after City Council passes Mute R. Kelly resolution

Melissa BenderR. Kelly is no longer welcome in the city of Philadelphia, following an unanimous decision by the City Council to pass a “Mute R. Kelly” bill. 

Thursday, council member Helen Gym introduced the resolution in the wake of the renewed controversy surrounding the singer. 

Gym took to Twitter to announce the passing of the bill in a series of tweets

“We reject a system that silences black women and accepts black pain. We believe survivors. R. Kelly is not welcome in Philadelphia,” the statement read.

As previously reported, Kelly has faced a tidal wave of backlash following the premiere of Lifetime’s shocking expose Surviving R. Kelly. The docuseries detailed the 12 Play artist’s alleged decades-long history of sexual, physical and mental abuse of young women. 

Kelly has since been dropped from Sony’s RCA Records and is currently under criminal investigation by the Fulton County District of Georgia.
