The Ava DuVernay directed Netflix series, ‘When They See Us’, has struck a lot of hurt and rage in it’s viewers and has been the driving force behind a lot of viewers digging deeper into the true story of the Central Park Five. Linda Fairstein, the prosecutor and head of investigation for the Central Park jogger case, can be considered everyone’s least favorite person. Viewers took to Instagram creating a hashtag, #CancelLindaFairstein, that began trending last week, and petitions have been started with hopes to end production of Fairstein’s books.
Amid all the backlash, Glamour magazine decided to strip Fairstein of the ‘Glamour’s Women of the Year Award’ that she was presented back in 1993. Glamour released a statement and explained:
“Glamour’s Women of the Year awards should reflect our culture, the values of our brand, and our audience. We remain committed to being thoughtful and purposeful about whom we choose to celebrate, and in this case, the lens of history has shown us that we got it wrong. She received the award in 1993, before the full injustices in this case were brought to light,” the open letter continued. “Though the convictions were later vacated and the men received a settlement from the City of New York, the damage caused is immeasurable.”
