by

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey was being sued over he song, “All I Want For Christmas” by a man who claimed his 1989 song of the same name was ripped off by Carey.
On November 1st, Vince Vance voluntarily dropped his lawsuit according to Billboard, but could refile at a later date.

Vance claimed his song received extensive airplay during the 1993 holiday season, a year before Carey released her megahit. Vance was suing Carey for $20 million, but experts said it would be difficult for him to win the lawsuit.

Vance’s song only had the same title and a single lyric as Carey’s version. “Words and short phrases are not protectable under copyright law,” said Paul Fakler, music litigator at Mayer Brown.
